Exam Questions - Employee Relations - Coursework Example Collective bargaining refers to the participation of trade unions, free market sympathizers and employee representatives in determining and setting up of employee’s pay. Such practices are meant to ensure that when setting up the pays, the rights of the employees are taken care of. Since 1879, the trend in the collective bargaining has been moving from the decentralized collective bargain. Unitarism is a theory of autonomy that is characterized by minimal external influence in the decision making process. In this approach, there is very little involvement of the employees in the decision making. Unitarism is autocratic in nature. Pluralism on the other hand refers to a theory where there is very high level of trade union membership and involvement of employees in decision making. In this approach, the trade unions are clearly recognized to have a very legitimate role employee matters and how the employees and employer relate. Employee Relation in the United Kingdom as well as in the entire Europe has changed over the years. This has been in terms of the health and safety issues, collectivism and participation. United Kingdom has also witnessed the emergence of the freedom of association together with equal treatment frameworks that are all meant to ensure that employee rights are maintained.
